Who were the Normans?

This History resource intended for EAL learners at KS3, supports them to understand the influence that the Normans and the Norman conquest had on the English history and culture. The resource is heavily adapted for learners ranging from band B (Early acquisition) to band D (Competent), offering a variety of communicative and grammar-based activities.

The resource offers learners opportunities to develop communicative skills by using a jigsaw activity (groupwork), a Venn diagram activity (pairwork) and the use of a card game (Pelmanism). Learners are provided image flashcards as well to support vocabulary development.

Learners are also offered individual activities within the resource. Those on lower bands of English language proficiency will benefit from activities focusing on how to form past simple form verbs in English (gap-fill activities). Those more proficient in English are offered gap-fill activities focusing on how to transform verbs into nouns (nominalisation).

There is also an activity on the influence of Old French on the modern English, which is suitable for all learners in your classroom, beyond those who use EAL.
