Language for Results International offers a suite of online courses to support school staff to work more effectively with EAL learners. The courses are adapted from the Foundation’s highly successful Language for Results programme in the UK and have been trialled and evaluated with partner international schools in Europe and Asia.
The courses are aimed at different roles and levels of experience within a school, including newly-qualified and experienced teachers, teaching assistants as well as EAL co-ordinators/leads/heads of EAL. These courses are available to both schools and individuals.
Each course is tutored and consists of at least five hours of content across a four-week period, including a live webinar. On completing a course, participants receive a certificate.
I enjoyed this course because it gave me the opportunity to meet and learn from other EAL teachers! It also presented me with resources that I had not considered before.Teacher, Assessing the Language Proficiency of Learners using EAL
An extremely useful and manageable course for the busy teacher!Teacher, Adaptive Teaching for Learners using EAL

This course aims to equip and enable school staff to embed effective practices for assessing the English language proficiency of pupils who use EAL in order to inform targeted in-class support, leading to improved learning and educational outcomes for these pupils. It introduces practitioners to The Bell Foundation’s EAL Assessment Framework for Schools and provides specialist guidance on using the Framework in a pragmatic and realistic way. The course is relevant for teachers, teaching assistants, EAL co-ordinators and middle leaders.
This course aims to raise awareness of what is and what is not comprehensible, accessible English language for learners using EAL. It explores what can make English difficult to understand and introduces a range of easy-to-use, practical strategies for giving instructions and checking understanding which can be used both in and out of the classroom. The course is relevant for all school staff including administrators, teaching assistants, teachers and senior leaders.
The course provides EAL co-ordinators with the knowledge and strategies required to organise impactful and inclusive EAL provision in school. Participants will reflect on the different approaches to EAL provision, learn more about the dimensions of inclusive practice and explore strategies for developing them within their specific school context. The course is relevant for EAL co-ordinators, school leaders with responsibility for organising EAL provision and EAL teachers who would like to become EAL co-ordinators.
This course explores what is meant by ‘academic English’ and introduces practitioners to practical strategies for planning academic language development into lessons. It aims to increase awareness of the language demands across different subjects and equip school staff with strategies and activities for developing that language. The course is relevant for teachers, teaching assistants, EAL co-ordinators and middle leaders.
This course is aimed at international school staff with decision-making responsibilities for EAL provision. Participants will learn how to embed effective practices for assessing the English language proficiency of pupils using English as an Additional Language (EAL), leading to more targeted in-class support and improved learner outcomes for these pupils. The course is relevant for school leaders with responsibility for EAL provision, EAL co-ordinators or heads of EAL.
This course aims to familiarise teaching assistants working in international schools with some of the challenges that learners using EAL might face when learning English and learning through English at the same time. The course also introduces practical, easy-to-use strategies for supporting learners who use EAL to develop the language skills they need to access the curriculum and fulfil their potential. The course is relevant for teaching assistants and other classroom support staff.
This course aims to increase the language awareness of teaching staff so that they can meet the language development needs of pupils who use English as an Additional Language (EAL). By increasing awareness of how language is used in curricular lessons, teachers can support learners who use EAL more effectively. It explores areas EAL learners may find particularly difficult or confusing and offers practical strategies that can be implemented in the classroom. The course is relevant for teachers, teaching assistants and middle leaders.
The courses are practical, designed to fit around the busy lives of school staff, focus on staff applying and evaluating the ideas and strategies they learn within their school, and encourage participants to share their experiences with each other.
Participants have praised the programme’s transferability to the classroom, which is achieved by providing:
√ Practical, transferable strategies, from basic communication skills to targeted differentiation techniques for EAL pupils.
√ Ready-made resources that can be used and embedded in everyday practice.
√ Ample opportunities to become familiar with, analyse and evaluate these strategies and resources.

Enjoyed the course; ... [the tutors] are both great teachers and I really enjoyed working with them and getting very useful feedback from them. It was also quite good to see people come together from different countries and to share in their experiences. Great course!Course participant, Supporting learners with EAL for Teaching Assistants
