Supporting the Education of Children Who Use English as an Additional Language

In this summary, we outline our policy recommendations, across five key areas, for ensuring that pupils who use English as an Additional Language (EAL) receive effective and appropriate support in education:

• Policy informed by appropriate data;
• Reintroduction of statutory proficiency assessment;
• Appropriate EAL allocation within the National Funding Formula;
• Build EAL expertise into statutory teacher training curriculums;
• Don’t leave behind children arriving late into the school system.
