Developing the Language Skills of Advanced English Language Learners (Primary)
This webinar will present practical classroom ideas for promoting the linguistic development of advanced English language learners (bands C-E) at primary level.
Following February’s presentation Using the EAL Assessment Framework with Advanced English Language Learners, this webinar focuses on what to do with learners after teachers have set language development targets. The webinar will explore strategies, activity types and techniques that will most benefit higher proficiency learners of English. Looking at specific examples of descriptors, the webinar will examine characteristics of student language at Band C (developing competence), Band D (competent) and Band E (fluent) and consider what teaching staff can do to best help learners reach these language targets. This practical webinar will include examples of activities from across the curriculum and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
The overall aim of the webinar is to help teachers provide continued language support for plurilingual learners once they are able to use English more independently to ensure their learners can meet their academic potential in a primary international school setting.
This webinar will explore:
- Why continued language development for advanced English language learners is important.
- What strategies might be best used with this group of learners to promote language development.
- Techniques, activity types and resources for higher proficiency learners.

Tom Beakes joined The Bell Foundation in 2020. Tom has worked in language education since 2003 and has taught in China, Japan, Ecuador and north Africa. His main areas of interest are teaching young learners, project-based learning and teacher development. He holds an MA in anthropological linguistics and is CELTA and DELTA qualified. He has worked as a teacher trainer in the UK and abroad and is a regular speaker at English Language Teaching conferences such as IATEFL.
