Comprehensible English for Learners who are New to English (Online Course)

This online course aims to raise awareness of what is and what is not comprehensible, accessible English Language for learners using EAL, particularly those who are new to English or in the early acquisition stages.

This course familiarises school staff with some of the challenges learners using EAL might face when learning English and learning through English at the same time.

The course explores what can make English difficult to understand and introduces a range of easy-to-use, practical strategies for giving instructions and checking understanding which can be used both in and out of the classroom. Using these practical strategies will better enable learners using EAL to understand school staff in a range of school situations, access curriculum content and integrate successfully into the school community.

This three-module course is designed to work around the busy schedules of professionals in schools. With five hours of online study over a four-week period, the course enables participants to work at a manageable pace with plenty of time to process course content and apply relevant insights to their contexts. The course is designed to be highly interactive and collaborative, with opportunities to work with other course participants, course tutors and course material. Module two consists of a live webinar where participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from and with each other in real time. Tickets are available for both primary and secondary practitioners in international schools.

A certificate will be awarded for successful completion of the course.

Course dates: 7 September-5 October 2022
