Supporting Vocabulary Development for Multilingual Learners (Primary Webinar)

This free webinar explores how international school teachers might support vocabulary development for learners using EAL.

This webinar will explore practical ways in which primary teachers and teaching assistants in international schools can support with vocabulary development to ensure that multilingual learners can meaningfully participate in and make contributions to all aspects of school life; both social and academic.

Areas of focus will include:

  • The connection between vocabulary development and academic achievement.
  • Viable principles and processes for identifying high impact vocabulary in your curriculum.
  • Guidelines for prioritising which vocabulary to teach.
  • A comprehensive approach to vocabulary development that incorporates both direct and indirect processes.
  • Strategies to use for teaching new vocabulary and practising its use.
  • How multilingual learners can use their first language to develop vocabulary in English.

Your trainer, Tom

Tom Beakes joined The Bell Foundation in 2020. Tom has worked in language education since 2003 and has taught in China, Japan, Ecuador and north Africa. His main areas of interest are teaching young learners, project-based learning and teacher development. He holds an MA in anthropological linguistics and is CELTA and DELTA qualified. He has worked as a teacher trainer in the UK and abroad and is a regular speaker at English Language Teaching conferences such as IATEFL.
