Overcoming Language Barriers in the Criminal Justice System

In this summary, we outline our policy recommendations, across three key areas, for tackling the language barriers faced by speakers of ESL* in the criminal justice system:

• Improving data collection across the system;
• Ensuring the rights of ESL speakers are upheld;
• Improving access to effective ESOL in prison to support rehabilitation.
