Supporting the Education of Children Who Use English as an Additional Language

In this briefing, we outline our calls for change across five key areas, for ensuring that pupils who use English as an Additional Language (EAL) receive effective and appropriate support in education:

1. Address the EAL policy vacuum as a priority. 
2. Assess English proficiency. 
3. Maintain EAL resources in the School Funding Formula.
4. Train teachers for multilingual classrooms. 
5. Support children with high needs arriving later into the school system.
6. Reform Ofsted to include EAL in inspections.
