Local environment

This is a flexible resource that provides visuals, collaborative activities and scaffolds for writing to support learning about the local environment.

New to English learners will be able to acquire key vocabulary, talk about a walk around their home or school and then write about that walk.

It contains a set of flashcards that can be used in various ways to introduce the vocabulary of the local environment. A connect 4 game can support the consolidation of this vocabulary. An observation sheet and a storyboard are included to be used in conjunction with a walk around the local environment. Learners’ writing is then scaffolded through the use of a substitution table or a word bank.
