Post-16 Education Guidance for Recently Arrived EAL Learners

This guidance is designed for schools and organisations to share with their students in key stage 4.

It aims to support learners who have come from another country and are navigating the UK education system, particularly those aged 15 and above. It provides essential information for those studying at a UK school or preparing to enter college and may also be valuable for parents and carers who are helping learners make decisions about their education.

The guidance is especially helpful if:

  • You are 15+, currently in school, and thinking about what to do after finishing Year 11.
  • You have recently arrived in the UK, are aged 15-18, and are not currently enrolled in school but are considering your next steps.

How the Guidance is Organised

The guidance is structured to provide clear, step-by-step advice across a range of important topics:

  1. Glossary: Key terms and their meanings, making it easier to understand UK education terminology.
  2. Options After Secondary School: This section explores the paths available to learners who are about to finish school, or those who have recently arrived and are looking to start at a college.
  3. Improving Your English: Information on courses that can help improve English language skills before starting further studies.
  4. Choosing the Best Route: Helpful links and quizzes to guide you in making informed decisions about your education and career options.
  5. Paying for Education: Guidance on potential costs for post-16 education, particularly relevant if you will be 19 or older when finishing a two-year course or applying to university.
  6. Preparing for College: Advice on what to find out before applying to colleges, attending open days, and what questions to ask teachers and staff during visits.
  7. Asylum Seeker/Refugee Considerations: Important information for learners with refugee or asylum seeker status and how this may impact their education choices.
  8. Post-16 Options Chart: A useful visual representation of the different paths available after Year 11.
  9. Considering University: Information for learners thinking about applying to university, now or in the future.
  10. Real-Life Stories: Inspiring examples of young people who have navigated the UK education system and found successful paths to their careers.

This comprehensive guidance is a valuable tool by The Bell Foundation to help recently arrived learners using EAL and their families make informed choices about their post-16 education journey in the UK.
