This course develops academic language awareness and helps teaching staff deliver lessons that develop academic language of EAL learners.
This course for international school staff is the second in a set of two courses covering Language for Learning, although you are welcome to enrol on this course whether you have completed the first course in the series or not. This course builds on the Understanding Language for Learning in Multilingual Schools course by focusing on the characteristics of ‘language for learning’ and explores how to teach the varieties of English that learners using EAL need to succeed academically.
By better understanding what academic English looks like in different contexts, you will be better able to plan language support for learners across the curriculum. You will learn how to identify the language demands of the curriculum and decide on the most suitable strategies to support learners in using this language.
This three-module course is designed to work around the busy schedules of professionals in international schools. With five hours of online study over a 4.5-week period, the course enables you to work at a manageable pace with plenty of time to process course content and apply relevant insights to your context. The course is designed to be highly interactive and collaborative, with opportunities to work with other course participants, course tutors and course material.
Tickets are available for both primary and secondary practitioners in international schools.
A certificate will be awarded for successful completion of the course.
Course dates: 17 January – 16 February 2024.
Ticket sales end 10 January 2024, 16:00 UK time (UTC +0).
