Prison and Probation Staff: Communicating With ESL Speakers (Online Course)
The course gives guidance to prison/probation staff on effective communication with service users speaking English as a second or additional language.
This 2.5-hour online course for prison/probation staff explores what language barriers are faced by service users/offenders who are new to English. It provides guidance to participants on how they can adapt their speech, and gives advice on other aids that can be used in order to communicate more effectively with service users who are new to English.
What will you do on the course?
- Gain a deeper understanding of the language barriers faced by someone who is new to English.
- Learn about what features of spoken English are difficult to understand.
- Learn how to make speech more comprehensible when giving instructions.
- Learn how to check understanding of instructions.
- Develop other practical strategies to communicate effectively with people who are new to English.

Your trainer, Emily
Emily Curran joined The Bell Foundation as a trainer in September 2018. Prior to joining The Bell Foundation, Emily worked in English language teaching (ELT) and taught both adults and young learners in the UK and Thailand respectively, before going on to become a teacher trainer in the ELT sector. Emily has a CELTA and DELTA and has also worked closely with Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign (CRRC) as a liaison for the English Language Provision. Emily has worked on the ESOL Screening Tool, a tool for understanding ESOL support needs for services users in prison.
Your trainer, Tom
Tom Beakes joined The Bell Foundation in 2020. Tom has worked in language education since 2003 and has taught in China, Japan, Ecuador and north Africa. His main areas of interest are teaching young learners, project-based learning and teacher development. He holds an MA in anthropological linguistics and is CELTA and DELTA qualified. He has worked as a teacher trainer in the UK and abroad and is a regular speaker at English language teaching conferences such as IATEFL.
