The course gives guidance to victim support staff on effective communication with victims who speak English as a second or additional language.
This 2.5-hour online course for staff working in victim support services explores language barriers faced by victims of crime who are new to English. It provides guidance on how case workers, administrators, volunteers and other staff can adapt their speech, and gives advice on other aids that can be used in order to communicate more effectively with victims of crime who are new to English.

Emily Curran joined The Bell Foundation as a trainer in September 2018. Prior to joining The Bell Foundation, Emily worked in English language teaching (ELT) and taught both adults and young learners in the UK and Thailand respectively, before going on to become a teacher trainer in the ELT sector. Emily has a CELTA and DELTA and has also worked closely with Cambridge Refugee Resettlement Campaign (CRRC) as a liaison for the English Language Provision. Emily has worked on the ESOL Screening Tool, a tool for understanding ESOL support needs for services users in prison.
Tom Beakes joined The Bell Foundation in 2020. Tom has worked in language education since 2003 and has taught in China, Japan, Ecuador and north Africa. His main areas of interest are teaching young learners, project-based learning and teacher development. He holds an MA in anthropological linguistics and is CELTA and DELTA qualified. He has worked as a teacher trainer in the UK and abroad and is a regular speaker at English language teaching conferences such as IATEFL.
