Get regional EAL training in my school

At The Bell Foundation, we believe that the best approach to improving the attainment of multilingual learners is to embed long-term, sustainable EAL provision and inclusive practices. That’s why we’ve developed Language for Results, our not-for-profit programme of professional learning, which aims to:

  • increase the skills, expertise and confidence of school staff;
  • support the school to develop an inclusive learning environment and systems in which multilingualism is embraced as an asset.

Our partners

Our partners are vetted, trained and licensed by The Bell Foundation to ensure quality remains high. They have a deep understanding of the needs of learners and families in their region and can provide context-specific support. Like the Foundation, our partners are aligned in our objective of improving outcomes for multilingual learners by embedding long-term, sustainable EAL provision and inclusive practices. In 2023, our Licensed Practitioners achieved a 99% recommendation rate for training delivery.

What’s included in the training programme?

As well as professional learning and development courses, our Language for Results programme, underpinned by our five EAL principles, includes guidance and resources which are relevant and useful to school staff.

  • Training courses: A comprehensive range of courses designed to meet the specific learning needs of school staff in different roles, from teaching assistants and trainee teachers in Initial Teacher Training programmes, to courses for non-teaching staff and leadership teams.
  • Webinars: A programme of free webinars which aims to raise awareness and inspire learning through exploring current research, policy, and pedagogic practices related to EAL provision.
  • Assessment Framework: The Bell Foundation’s evidence informed and award-winning EAL Assessment Framework for Schools and digital EAL Assessment Tracker have been designed to support school staff in conducting meaningful assessments of learners’ proficiency in English.
  • Needs Assessment: A full school visit to assess the current EAL provision, culminating in a detailed report and plan that is negotiated and agreed with the school’s leaders.
  • Teaching Resources and Guidance: A suite of guidance and classroom-based teaching resources is available to support the teaching of learners using EAL, from those who are new to English through to those who are fluent.

Who can benefit from the training?

Our Language for Results programme is relevant to individuals, groups and whole schools. Each of our partners runs the programme slightly differently. Please contact them directly for more information around the details of their offer, including cost and types of courses provided.

Get support as a school

The extent to which you can employ the Language for Results programme in your school can vary, depending on your context or need:

  • Some schools choose to begin their programme with a Needs Assessment visit, and then follow the recommendations in the resulting three year Implementation Plan. The plan might include recommendations of a range of professional development courses for different groups of the school staff.
  • Many schools have a clear idea of their training needs and choose to follow a specific pathway. For example, a series of training sessions focused on assessment for an identified group of staff, such as all Key Stage 1 teachers and support assistants.
  • Other schools have a very specific training need and choose to opt for just one or two courses initially. For example, training on supporting newly arrived learners.
