Language for Results

Language for Results is a long term, not for profit, evaluated training programme designed and delivered by The Bell Foundation, which seeks to improve the attainment of children who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) by developing the knowledge and skills of school staff. The programme is informed by evidence based research on EAL educational achievement and school approaches to the education of EAL students carried out by leading universities.

Our Language for Results programme is currently being trialled with groups and clusters of schools around the UK and our current delivery partners on the programme are Ormiston Academies Trust, Luton First Teaching School Alliance, Luton Borough Authority, the Britannia Teaching School AllianceShireland Collegiate Aacdemy, Hartsdown Academy, The Cooperative Academies Trust.

Our partner schools have reported that the Language for Results programme has helped them to develop a whole-school approach to EAL provision. Senior Management and teachers in partner schools have praised our training programme’s transferability to the classroom, which is achieved by introducing practical strategies – from basic communication skills to targeted differentiation techniques for EAL pupils and ready-made resources that can be used and embedded in everyday practice.

We aim to build new partnerships across the UK, developing sustainable EAL provision and regional Centres of Expertise which can share knowledge and skills amongst local practitioners and improve results for many more schools and EAL students. The aim is to make school partners self-sufficient, and able to support and guide other local schools on developing their EAL provision.

We understand that every school is different, and we therefore work together with partners to meet the needs of children with EAL, from new arrivals with limited English to advanced bilingual learners. We aim to create the following outcomes for schools:

  • Improved exam results for children with EAL
  • More confident and skilled staff equipped to support children with EAL
  • A whole-school, integrated approach to EAL
  • Local Centres of Expertise.
