Assessing the Language Proficiency of Learners Who Use EAL (Online Course)

Pre-webinar online tasks, completed at your own pace over a two-week period.

You will:

• Explore and reflect on how different contexts – including yours – approach the assessment of multilingual learners.

• Learn about how the Assessment Framework for Schools is organised and how it can be used.

• Become more aware of how to use the Assessment Framework to make a best fit judgment of the English language proficiency of multilingual learners in speaking, listening, and reading and viewing, to monitor your learners’ ongoing progress and set appropriate language learning targets.

You will:

• Explore how to use the Assessment Framework to assess a learner’s writing.

• Identify strengths and areas for development.

• Set appropriate and meaningful language learning targets.

Time commitment: 1 hour.

Please note there will be no tutor presence on the course during the half-term week (26-30 October).

Final project to implement learning from the course, followed by tutor feedback. You will apply what you have learned in Modules 1 and 2 by assessing one of your own learners’ speaking or writing skills and setting meaningful learning targets for them.
