Embedding Language for Learning in Multilingual Schools (Online Course)

This course develops academic language awareness and helps teaching staff deliver lessons that develop academic language of EAL learners.

This course explores how to teach the varieties of English that multilingual learners need to succeed academically. By better understanding what academic English looks like in different contexts, you will be better able to plan language support for learners across the curriculum. You will learn how to identify the language demands of the curriculum and decide on the most suitable strategies to support learners in using this language.

The course will address the following questions:

  • What do we mean when we talk about “language for learning” and “academic English”?
  • What are the differences between social and academic language and how can we make these clearer to students?
  • What features of academic English pose problems for multilingual learners and how can we support them to use these features more accurately?
  • How do we choose which language to teach our multilingual learners?
  • What techniques and activities can be used to teach new, curriculum-focused language?

Who is this course for?

Primary and secondary practitioners, including:

  • Subject specialists and class teachers who work with EAL learners.
  • EAL teachers.
  • Teaching assistants.
