Making subject assessment accessible for multilingual learners (Webinar)

This webinar will explore how international schools can make curricular assessment more inclusive for plurilingual learners of English.

Accurate assessment of curricular knowledge is vital to successful learning – but this can present challenges for learners who are still developing their language skills alongside their subject knowledge. Many English-medium international schools use assessment tools designed for learners already proficient in the language of instruction, which can unintentionally affect learning outcomes when used with learners who use English as an additional language.

In this webinar, Ted Winslow (Regional Head of Multilingualism, ISP) will discuss how mainstream assessments can be made more accessible for multilingual learners and how international schools can better prepare these learners for assessment success.

Drawing on practical examples across both primary and secondary settings, this webinar is a must for anyone who is involved in the assessment of multilingual learners. The webinar will also include a Q&A.

Areas of focus will include:

  • The difference between assessing content knowledge and assessing language proficiency.
  • How to avoid accidentally assessing language when we mean to assess content.
  • Ideas for preparing multilingual students for assessment success in medium and long-term planning.
  • How EAL specialists and subject/class teachers can work together to create more effective assessments for multilingual pupils.
  • Practical suggestions for designing linguistically inclusive assessments.
