Helping EAL learners succeed: The latest evidence (Webinar)

This webinar will unpack the University of Oxford’s latest data and analysis about EAL learners in English schools. Many of these learners, especially those who are joining school in a new language, will need tailored support to help them develop their English skills, access the curriculum, and achieve their full potential.

How can the latest evidence on EAL schoolchildren inform school support to help learners thrive?

Multilingual classrooms are now the norm in England, with over 1 in 5 schoolchildren speaking English as an Additional Language (EAL). Understanding how we can better support EAL pupils – and the relationship between their proficiency in English and level of attainment – is vital to ensuring that they are able to achieve and succeed.

Many EAL learners learners, especially those who are joining school in a new language, will need tailored support to help them develop their English skills, access the curriculum, and achieve their full potential.

Join us and practitioners from the sector as we discuss this new research and what opportunities and challenges this presents for schools.

Panel:

  • Silvana Richardson – Strategic Education Advisor, The Bell Foundation (chair).
  • Jo Martin – Multilingual Learner Advisory (Secondary), Swansea Council
  • Zuzanna Zajaczkowska – Class Teacher, St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, Blackhill
  • Ariel Lindorff - Co-author of the report English as an Additional Language and Educational Achievement in England in 2023 and Associate Professor of Education, University of Oxford

This webinar will be focused on the findings from this research, the experiences of practitioners working in multilingual classrooms, and what this means for schools who work with EAL pupils.
