One in five pupils in England use English as an Additional Language (EAL) making it likely that early career teachers (ECTs) will have multilingual learners in their classroom (School census, 2023). Yet, research shows that ECTs feel least prepared to teach in multilingual classrooms compared to all other training areas.

We have developed a free, self-study ECT and EAL series that ECTs and their mentors can use during the statutory, two-year induction process that was recently established for ECTs by the Department for Education, based on the Early Career Framework.

What is the ECT and EAL series?

The series consists of 18 short, highly impactful EAL topics that ECTs and their mentors can choose to dip into when needed or work through in chronological order.

Modules 1-8 are directly aligned to standards 1-8 in the EC Framework yet focus on distinct EAL knowledge and approaches. Each module contains:

  • 5-8 minute video presentation on each topic;
  • 1-2 page teacher resource with suggested questions and tasks;
  • 2-3 page mentor guidance resource that can support discussions and feedback on tasks;
  • Optional resources to explore each topic further.

How does the series work?

The self-study series is freely available to anyone online. Users will be given a two-year access period to all modules, the length of a typical induction process. It is up to the ECT mentor and early career teacher to determine how and when they want to engage with the materials. The series can be:

  • Embedded into an existing ECT mentorship programme;
  • Used as personal learning for ECTs or mentors;
  • Used as part of a school’s larger induction programme for ECTs.

How do I access the ECT and EAL materials?

The series is available via the Foundation’s Moodle platform.

Access the materials, self-register and enrol here.

If you already have a Moodle account, you will be able to enrol on the series directly from within Moodle. If you are new to Moodle, you will need to create a free account first.
